At the Adelphi University Innovation Center, actively exploring leading-edge technologies is fundamental to our mission, to understand how technologies could intersect with and affect our daily lives. Recently, we have been experimenting with Lyria 3, a family of AI music generation models developed by Google DeepMind, designed to produce high-quality, 30-second instrumental tracks and songs from simple text prompts. As an example, we had the service generate a single musical riff about the Innovation Center in a variety of distinct styles (classic rock, country, pop, and folk); you can listen to the results on our YouTube channel, or you can try generating your own music.
While the results were technically impressive, we believe technology works best in an assistive or collaborative role rather than a replacement for artistic and creative endeavors. Even when AI systems produce polished work, it often looks, sounds, or feels generic because it is built on patterns and prediction rather than lived human experience. As technology becomes more deeply woven into our creative processes, the real question isn’t just what technology can do for us, but what we still want to do for ourselves. We hope our exploration of these tools encourages others to do the same, while mindfully considering the role that technology plays in our lives and maintaining a healthy balance as technology continues to evolve.
